Jad Abumrad, my hero from Radiolab, tells of the path of creation of his out-of-the-box radio show. After he put some random soundbites together, that really didn't make any sense at all, he describes the feeling of being lost in a forest, and then sensing he'd stumbled upon "the arrow", which said "follow me". In storytelling, there is a point that the author cues the audience by saying something like, "and at that moment, everything changed..."
Jad tells of how he had no idea where the arrows would take him. Change cannot be planned, it can only be recognized.
As a writer, I have often feelings of being lost in that forest. I feel alone a lot of the times. I feel lost and looking for direction. I am training myself, to have the time, the wherewithal and the sensitivity to RECOGNIZE the arrows that may occur. One has to be looking for them. One has to be receptive to them. This takes time. This takes silence. This takes available brainwaves.
This year, I said goodbye to my business of ten years, Simple Difference. Clearing the space.
I also found out yesterday I did not get a job that I thought I'd get for sure. This has to be a good thing.
It's much easier to have a job then to write. It's much simpler to know what to do than try to make your creative juices flow and know what to do with them. But I have to be confident, that I am clearing the slate here, so that I am PRESENT when the arrows come.
