Antiracist Guide for Jewish Circles, Social Justice Volunteer
Daniela Weil, together with Jen Margulies, and Mindy Lee, developed the antiracist program at Congregation Beth Israel called Chavuraction Circles. Daniela ran various cohorts of this group between 2020 and 2023. She is currently developing that program for Jewish youth. She is also working on completing the 6 month Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out (DRIO) program run by Yehuda Webster from the Inside Out Wisdom and Action Project and Lindsay Newman from B'chol Lashon .
In addition, Daniela has worked as a volunteer with refugees both in Houston through Interfaith Ministries and in Austin through Grassroots Leadership. In September of 2021, Daniela helped to start a non-profit agency called Austin Jews and Partners for Refugees to deal with the humanitarian crisis created by the arrival of over a thousand Afghan refugees in Austin. She is currently Board Secretary of that organization, as well as the communications lead and their volunteer coordinator. AJPR has now partnered with HIAS and are working together to resettle refugees in Austin.
When doing research for her book The Diary of Asser Levy: First Jewish Citizen of New York (Arcadia, 2020), Daniela became fascinated with the history of Jews in the New World in the seventeenth century and Jews' historical connection to slavery and racism. She has attended numerous lectures and talks by current researchers, and taken a deep dive into the subject, hoping to become a vessel for change and growth within the Community. Her talk on The First Jews of New York on Sephardic Genealogy's YouTube Channel has almost 2k views. Her article The Mikvah on the inquisition in Brazil was featured on The Jewish Book Council's site. She was a panelist for the Museum of Jewish Heritage's program Pioneers: Remembering the First Jews of America and she has also given talks on Lessons from a White Person on Racism, Caribbean Jews and the Austin Connection, Sephardic Jews in the Caribbean and Jews and Slavery for Congregation Beth Israel in Austin. All of these are available by request via zoom or personal visit. Daniela is available to give presentations at schools, synagogues, JCC's and any other Jewish organization. Click here to email her.
Daniela received the volunteer of the year award at CBI in 2022.
